Its 'Busy Season' at Peaceful Prairie Ranch!!
We've been busy here!
So far in 2016 we have sheared over 80 alpacas, birthed 8 perfect babies, attended a level 5 alpaca show in Denver, and a fall show in Grass Valley, CA. Now we are back on our usual fall birthing track, so its 'breeding season' here. We're also compiling our first ever AZ CoOp Sock runs, for an Arizona Grown product that everyone loves.
There is no rest for farmers it seems, but we wouldnt have it any other way!
||We have Appaloosas!
It really is a 'peaceful prairie' when you sit and look over the alpacas in their very own Arizona version of the 'Altiplano'. Our mile-high elevation lends itself to suit the alpacas just perfect. Warm sunny days and nice cool nights - with cold winters are what we experience on dry ground - just like the alpacas native lands. While we like the 'dry' climate for lack of parasites in the herd and need for routine worming, we do feel a little jealous of those farms with lush green pastures - guess we can't have everything! We really couldn't think of a more perfect environment to raise alpacas than right here.
Now well into our second decade of raising alpacas, we've added several champion merino sheep and continue to grow in our knowledge of this wonderful industry of natural fiber farming. We utilize a sustainable farming module with organic practices employed here at Peaceful Prairie Ranch. We appreciate the growth and popularity of growing natural fibers, and really love the type of farming we do. In recent years, we've watched a leap forward in the genetic improvement of the North American alpaca herd, and boy are we seeing that here at this farm! We're really excited about what we're doing and what we're growing here! Were focusing on fleece uniformity and density in our herd.
Here at Peaceful Prairie Ranch you will find excellent show-quality alpacas, foundation breeding stock and also pet quality, fiber animals. Our prices are fair and because we are a large farm, we are able to offer financing and payment plans for purchases. We also often have fiber animals that we just seek excellent homes for that we have 'adopted' to help others. With such a great selection, we really may have just what you're looking for!
Our 'show-ing' this year has been incredible! The 2016 Denver group was met with top competition at what is the largest show in the US - to even come home with ribbons was incredible, but we did! In California last month, we dominated the Fleece show in White grabbing Color Champ, Reserve Champ and 3rd place! Up and coming 'Solstice' (fawn) got a Reserve Color Champ ribbon in halter, which was really awesome. We tried a few in the 'Walking Fleece' show as well, which was very educational and rewarding. All 8 females placed in halter classes as well.
In 2015 Wendy took three boys over to AlpacaFest West in Norco, CA and we came home with a blue ribbon for Trapper (again!) and two 2nd places for Hummingherd's Tuck and Caribe! You'll want to check these boys out...
Showing in 2014, we took 8 Peaceful Prairie Ranch alpacas to the 2014 SW Regional Alpaca Show in Cottonwood, AZ - they all came home with ribbons! So did their many of their friends from the ranch here... When 25 alpacas from the ranch attend a show and all come home with a ribbon, its a good days work!
